A Little History…

A Little History…

How did it all begin?

Mimosas. No, seriously. Mimosas. We got brunch-drunk and decided it would be a good idea to get chicks on a whim…the rest is history!

Just kidding…not really. We really did get brunch-drunk and got chicks impulsively at the feed store but the rest is certainly not history! We created a chick sanctuary in our little guest room of our rental duplex and did our best to keep the dogs from going completely ballistic. We had no clue what we were doing but we dove in head first and learned SO much and quickly became amateur experts on backyard chickens!

We had two chicks: Batman and Robin…although their formal names were Krystal with a K and Destinee. They were spicy babies and we fell in love watching them grow and become full-fledged chickens!

Sadly, Robin turned out to be a rooster, which was not allowed within city limits where we lived at the time, so he was given to the local animal shelter and we had to add find more hens for our flock! Enter Tina and Queso! People talk about “soul dogs” when they find their canine-soulmate….well, Queso was my “soul-hen”! She was an an americauna pullet with the biggest personality of any bird I’ve ever met. She was funny, weird, loving and totally fit in with our family like a glove!

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the random chicken that showed up in our yard (randomly wandering the streets) and of course we took her in and named her Blanche.

This is the part of the story where I take a weird left turn and tell you about how much I love the show The Golden Girls and I have seen every episode at least twelve thousand times, memorized, quoted; it’s part of my personality and that’s how Blanche got her name.

On more than one occasion, Blanche wandered into our literal house and made herself at home. Like I said, chickens are unique and have the biggest, weirdest personalities!

So that’s it! The rest really is history! We finally moved our flock to a different house with a great space for a chicken run, we inherited more chickens from a high school friend (Larry Bird, Chickie Minage, and Stevie Chicks -she’s still with us!) and a coop that lasted us for many years. Our flock has changed, grown, morphed, changed, life and death has hit our home and we have sadly dealt with many sad tragedies over the years, but we’ve learned and grown and faced every challenge head-on!

Our flock is now 7 strong and we’ve added the honeybees and a toddler and our farm is actually whole (notice I did not say complete….we could always use more chickens…or goats…?!) Now for the next leg of our journey…thanks for being a part of it!
